Case Manager stated that the display can crack if you open the monitor from the right or left corner with a single hand. I read through the manual and did not see any instructions that states you should open with two hands to prevent the monitor from cracking. HP Case Managment was very unhelpful. I now have a useless HP laptop that is less than 60 days old. Basically a laptop paper weight. Way Better than Carpal Tunnel!By Don HiltonI have been using pen-based input since Windows 3.11 for Pen Computing, mostly to avoid wracking my hands, wrists, and fingers with typing. I have also used a variety of the latest generation of tablets. All of them have their strong points, but what I like best about the Compaq is that it runs in silence. Except for the fan popping on every once in a while, you don't even know there's a computer behind the screen. Also, the feel of the pen on the glass is very nice; like writing with an expensive ceramic-ball pen. The image on the screen is crystal clear. Even a bifocalled old geezer like me has no trouble sitting in a chair, tablet in lap, and working the afternoon away. The battery really does last 3 and a half to 4 hours, depending on what you're doing. The machine is fast and powerful enough for most needs, but it is not a gamer. The screen image is of decent quality (but not the greatest). The mouse pad design is slick and modern but takes some getting used of it (no borders), however the pad buttons are not very good and cheap to the touch. Also there is no webcam (understandable considering the price), but it is also missing a card reader which I didn't know about it until I looked for it.The dvd player is also flimsy and delicate, just treat it with care. Can't believe it has 3gb of RAM and a dual processor, so it's fast. The graphics are good too. I managed to get it to play Modern warfare 1 on low graphics settings. The 15" inch screen is really great for games and watching DVDs. The keys are a little wobelly, but they're good sized so it doesn't really matter. The speakers are also better than most laptop speakers, they can get decently loud with good quality. The biggest con for me was the switch from XP to windows 7. I really liked XP and its user interface. But I'll get used to 7 soon enough. This 7 OS has some really cool things about that you can probably figure yourself. Versatile Mobile MachineBy Matthew RajotteMy initial needs which lead me to purchase a laptop were mobility, media storage and playback (HD and non HD), and 3D modeling using Google SketchUp. I was looking to spend around $450-$500. After some research,this model kept making the comparison and with the price, it started looking like a winner. I made my purchase and I have never been happier. The screen is the right size for mobility, without sacrificing it's viewing capacity. Having a discrete graphics card, while not the most recent of architecture, coupled with (shared) 256mb from the DDR3 memory it performs quite well. I have to say it this laptop runs SketchUp almost as good as my desktop rig Core 2 Duo 3.0ghz 8gb of RAM and Geforce 9800GT video card. In all fairness, Sketchup is 32bit and can only address 2gb of ram, and is only a single threaded so alot of what you think are advantages to my rig, they are infact not. I loaded 2007 Office Suite on this. It is a very fast machine. Shipping from Amazon was quick and easy. I later found the same machine at the same price at a local Staples but since Amazon did not charge for shipping I came out the same. Look through the laptop literature carefully - there is reference to an extended accidental damage warranty that can be purchased online for slightly over $100 a year. It is a good idea if the laptop is going to travel around or be used by a younger person. You can make restore disks one time - it takes 3 DVDs or about 17 CDs. For the price it's a very good value for money (Mail-in Rebate + Free external floppy drive from HPShopping.com after mail-in rebate). I did comparison-shopping between multiple Compaq Presario's and Toshiba Satellite's and went with this one because of the following:PROS:1. Reasonable Configuration1.1) Intel Celeron (1.6 GHz) is not a bad processor. In today's race for 2.4+ Pentium P4s you have to pay at least two hundred bucks more just to acquire a better processor. In my opinion, it's not worth the price unless your needs are business-critical. 1.2) 256MB DDR SDRAM is good enough to start with; 512 would be better. Anyway, it's expandable to 1 GB, so when the memory prices drop, upgrade it!1.3) A 14.1-in XGA TFT display screen is not too small when compared with 15"1.4) 30GB enhanced-IDE hard disk drive, a DVD+CD-RW combo drive. It was two twenty plus tax on special at fry's. I doubt I would have liked to pay more that three hundred for this. For the purpose intended it is fine, plus I can check my email, search the web and write this review on Amazon :-)I can actually watch TV through its media center (off my HDHomerun) without dropout at HD video so better than I thought it would be actually. I would not try to run more than 2 applications and I doubt it would be useful for high end games and video editing etc but it's better than I thought.Additionally I really like windows 7 x64 that it runs.I doubt that I could make a computer for the components used in its manufacture.
